Following on from Lee Hipwell’s success in Bolton 2 years ago, Our very own treasurer Andy Dovernor travelled to Switzerland to take on the mighty IRONMAN. Set in the heart of one of Europe’s most beautiful countries, the course showcases Zurich’s picturesque lake and countryside.
This race offered a symmetrical one-loop swim course in the crystal clear water of Lake Zurich. After the 3.8k swim portion, a spectacular bike course led athletes through the city centre and then out of town along the lake shore; 30km later on the bike they wouldn’t have thought there was a city even close by. For the next hour, athletes rode along grazing lands, past small villages, and over the rolling countryside of Zurich. The two climbs, “The Beast” and “Heartbreak Hill,” were lined with spectators cheering and ringing cow bells, after the 180.2km ride athletes were faced with a Marathon finish, a four-loop run course took athletes through downtown Zurich. They ran down the world-famous Bahnhofstrasse and through beautiful alleys. After passing the town’s landmarks and the historic buildings, they ran back along the shores of Lake Zurich.
With some pretty tough races for people to enter these days an IRONMAN certainly has to be up there as one of toughest. Andy raced magnificently finishing the entire race in 12:16:24.
Well done Andy what an inspiration you are to us all, absolutely outstanding performance.
