Run over the ‘classic’ 5 mile distance, the race tackles a circular, undulating route which starts and finishes at the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service Headquarters in Birkenshaw.
With the banter flowing in G8’s Whatsapp group over the last few weeks, the excitement and nerves came to a head on Sunday when several of us headed to race this 5 miler as well as secretly wanting to beat all the others.
With threat of rain ever present it made for ideal running conditions and the damp conditions enabled us all to have a great race (well??). On arrival at Birkenshaw Fire HQ for the start it was clear that the bants was to continue with several of us giving our predictions as to who would conquer from the G8 group, so with Doddy, Patterson, Horan, Brady, Dodds and Windle grouped in together the elbows were at the ready and we were off, with Patterson and Newbery taking the early lead for the 1st uphill mile the rest left them to it, at 1.5 mile Windle made his move striding out and onto the fast downhill section Brady kept in touch trying to close the gap with Patterson, Doddy, Horan and Matt left in their wake, it was Windle’s to lose and crossing the bridge over the M62 Windle was struggling but kept pushing to take the spoils for G8, Brady pulled some time back but the gap was to much, 3rd home was Doddy getting past Patterson in the last 400m, Dodds was next followed by Horan having a shocker by her standards (blaming banana’s and porridge). Pauline Naylor raced to magnificant PB with David Bean also achieving a good PB.
‘I think the track is paying off’ said Windle at the finish
