Last Wednesday was the YVAA race at Knavesmire. A flat and dry course proved to be a very fast paced 5.8 mile race starting from York Race Course. A strong turn out from Queensbury coupled with some great runs saw the club regain 3rd place in the 1st 4 to count competition. 13 QRC runners took part, Anna Smith, 3rd in category & Cathrine Robinson in the ladies race. Darren Midgley beat rival Allan Dodds of Roundhay Runners by one position to ensure the battle in the M35 category goes down to the last race with both tied on equal points going into the race at Spenborough. Peter Huges, Carl Heron & Mick Coe completed the first four. Phil Robinson & Karl Chamberlain were again close, with Phil just 12 seconds ahead of Karl. Graham Jowett was next in followed by an appearance from recently retired chairman of the club, Steve Jones. Andrew Tempest-Mitchell and Steve Wilby completed the team along with non-counting Chris Williams.
Great to have so many club runners out, especially on a Wednesday night and in particular to see Steve Jones in his now local race.

The revived West Yorkshire 5, put on jointly by Bradford-Airedale AC & West Yorkshire Fire Service was on Sunday. The race has been missing from the Calendar for the last 5 years but has a long history dating back 40 years. An undulating 5 mile course, starting & finishing at the Fire Service HQ in Birkenshaw. The wind proved to make the race very tactical at the front with runners jostling for position all the way to the 4 mile marker before Willy Smith of KCAC pulled away once the wind was behind him to take the victory. Chris Williams battled on for 3rd place just behind Peter Hopson of Bradford-Airedale who took 2nd. Martin Firth was following close behind and finished 10th overall.

Tuesday evening saw the YVAA at Crossgates, the 6th of the series. Anna Smith finished 4th lady and top of her category, making a real challenge for overall victory in her category for the series, currently lying 3rd but with a race in hand. Darren was first back for the men in 10th place and also battling for a category vicyory in the overall stadings, just 1 point behind leader Allan Dodds of Roundhay Runners. Peter was next in 15th place and 1st in his category, extending his lead in the overall standings and looking to have all but secured his reign in the V55. Carl Heron and Phil Robinson completed the first four Queensbury Runners, keeping Queensbury close to Stainland and ahead of 5th place Horsforth in the Mens Team league table. Karl Chamberlain closely followed.

The Eccup 10 Mile Road Race, organised by Abbey Runners, took place on Sunday 7th July in blazing sunshine. More than 750 runners and several litres of sun cream hit the road in a highly competitive race which incorporates both the YCAA and the YVAA 10 Mile Championships for Men and Women. Shade was hard to find and quite a few runners either dropped out or fell back in temperatures well about 20°C. Otley AC had a fine day in the sun with Matt John winning the men’s race in 55.07 (he was 28th in the 2013 London Marathon) followed home in second place by team mate Scott Harrington in 56.40. Unsurprisingly Otley won the men’s team prize. In third place winning the 1st M50 prize was Carl Thackery (alas not Carl Heron) of Hallamshire Harriers. If you don’t know this guy’s credentials then, amongst many career highlights, he was 20th in the 1987 World Cross Country championships and third at the World half-marathon in 1993 in a time of 61.13! The first lady was Pauline Munro (Wetherby) in a terrific ninth position overall in 59.43.
Carl Heron, QRC’s only entry, finished in 69.23 in 87th place. Other notable performances from Bradford-based runners were Quentin Lewis (Baildon, 6th in 58.59) and Donna Edmondson-Booker (Idle, 1st F35 in 66.54). All in all it was one of those days when you felt really pleased to get around without succumbing to the heat.
Mick Coe, Ben Clare and Karl Chamberlain were 3 of 187 running the Stoodley Pike Fell race on Tuesday evening. Warm conditions won’t have made this short but tough fell race any easier!

Heptonstall Fell Race…
Four Queensbury runners took part in the Heptonstall Fell Race this weekend. A brutal 6.5 mile fell race with 1500 feet of ascent! With the sun baking down, the task looked daunting and proved too much for one runner who collapsed over the finish line suffering from dehydration and was subsequently taken to hospital in an Ambulance. A number of retirees from the race also highlighted how tough the race was.
Some gritty performances from Peter Hughes, Ben Clare, Mick Coe & Graham Jowett who all showed they could put it in right to the end, taking a number of places in the final climb up the last field. Full results not yet published.
Two Queensbury finishers in the top 5 this weekened at Bradford Parkrun. This was a really friendly and enjoyable event with breathtaking views of hills covered with heather and bilberries from two of the highest summits in the Cheviots. There was an ear-popping descent from the Great Cheviot before climbing back up Hedgehope Hill, and little shelter from the heat in spite of a cool wind on the high ground and clear streams in the valleys. Amazingly the organisers had managed to transport water to all but one of the checkpoints!

The Helen Windsor 10k was well attended by Queensbury, a tough 10k run with quite a few small but draining climbs. Darren Midgely narrowly missed a top 10 spot, Peter Hughes claimed another top spot in the V55 category, Carl Heron on his way back to full fitness put in a good run, Phil Robinson was next with Richard Brook chasing just behind, a small stretch of downhill would surely have seen him catch him and Steve Wilby completed the team.
