Training > Training Routes

To ensure we have a varied pattern of routes, we operate a system whereby each member in turn, in alphabetical order of surname, chooses a route. This both keeps routes interesting, making sure that no two weeks are the same, and helps keep all members involved. It also acts as an incentive to turn up for training because if you don't turn up when it is your choice then you have to wait until your turn comes around again - although we do provide some flexibility for shift working etc.

The only unwritten rule in route choice relates to time. We try not to run any shorter than 50 minutes and no longer than 80 minutes. Most weeks tend to average out at slightly over the hour.

However, we do not turn training sessions into races and risk leaving slower runners feeling isolated. The person choosing the route identifies a number of meeting points every 2 or 3 miles where we regroup and make sure everyone is safe before continuing to the next meeting point.

The rotation and meeting point system together have proved to be very popular and not only do we get a very high percentage turn out of members - it is not unknown for every member of the club to turn up for training - but our numbers are often bolstered by guest runners from other clubs who also seem to enjoy the way we organise our training nights.

During the darker night we are, like most clubs, restricted to road running. To make these potentially depressing nights more bearable, many of our routes are away from built up areas where there is little traffic and often we do not see another person about. These routes take in such areas as the back roads of Queensbury, Thornton, Shelf, Northowram and Bradshaw. As some of these routes are quite dark it is always advisable to wear reflective clothing.

In summer we have some wonderful routes taking in the fantastic scenery of such areas as Shibden Valley, Doe Park Reservoir, Ogden Moors and Ogden Water. Most members enjoy getting away from the roads whenever possible and many of our routes during the lighter months are off-road and take in public footpaths, bridle ways, moorlands, woodlands and golf courses.

After training it is usual for most members to retire to the Pineberry Inn, about half a mile away, for a well earned pint and a chat.
