Saltburn 10K

HMSALT 1_0499
Mary on the Saltburn Trail

Mary Saunders, who recently joined the club, ran in the Saltburn 10K in North Yorkshire on Sat 15th August. Recent illness interfered with her training plans but she still managed a good time, finishing in 1:17.36 and in about 18th place overall (10th woman). Mary also raised £280 for the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association. Here is her report:

The race was really small – there was a trail marathon (probably longer than a marathon!), a trail half marathon (that was about 16 miles), as well as the trail 10K and participation was capped at 300 across all three races – this meant for a really nice relaxed atmosphere – I think there were maybe 40 runners tops in the 10K.

The race started, in glorious sunshine, on the main road outside the Leisure Centre and continued to, and then down, the wooded sides of the Skelton Beck clough (where we all got lost), down to the sea front, past the Ship Inn and up an evil set of quad destroying steps! Then it was about 3km of more gradual climbing following the Cleveland Way, right along the top of the cliffs, on the edge of the wheat fields. We made our way along the side of the railway, before crossing it (lovely cheery marshals), up a hill, through a cow field and then turned back for the descent, crossing the railway again and following a series of tracks back down to the bottom of the steps. We then retraced our steps back up the clough and along the road, finishing in the sports hall. In total it was 11.99km (surprise, surprise!) and about 775 feet of ascent.

There were medals and t-shirts for all finishers, trophies for the top three in the main categories and a fine spread of home bakes and drinks etc laid on in the hall. The shower and changing facilities were all very fancy too! The race is now moving to February due to car parking etc so I think I will have to enter again to better my time….

Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association (YVAA) results

West Vale (21st July) and Knavesmire (5th August) Results

Congratulations to those who have competed in one or both of the last two YVAA races. Great running from Stacey Cleal with identical times over the tricky and hilly West Vale course and the flat tarmac and tracks of the Knavesmire course. A fine 2nd and 4th place in her age group respectively. Mick Coe had a great run at West Vale on the kind of course he thrives on. He travelled to Knavesmire with a sore knee and decided to pull out just after the start. Carl, Andy and Graham ran both races. Graham was placed 4th in his age group in both races and just outside the prizes. Chris Rushworth was unlucky too. In the Knavesmire race a marshal went AWOL and he took a wrong turn along with several others. QRC life member and former club chair, Steve Jones, joined us in York too. The final race of the Grand Prix series takes place at Spenborough on November 8th.

The Yorkshireman

yorkshireman

A classic offroad half marathon and marathon on our doorstep: Oxenhope moor for the half, on to Wainstalls, Denholme and Harden for the full, with both routes starting at Haworth and finishing up the steep cobbles from Haworth Station.  Lining up on 14 September for this year’s races were Chris Rushworth, Peter May, Mick Coe, Anna Smith and Carl Heron.  There was very welcome support around the course from Graham Jowett, Phil Robinson, Karl Chamberlain and Peter Hughes.  Many thanks to Graham for the photos.

In spite of an easterly breeze over Oxenhope conditions were good and the half marathon was a fast race seeing Stainland’s Tanya Seager set a new female record with a 7th place overall finish. The winner of the men’s race, Ben Mounsey (Calder Valley), was just outside his own 2009 record.  The only Queensbury runner in the half, Mick Coe, had another strong run to finish 23rd of 244 in 2:03:33.

Carl Heron continued an excellent series of performances over the full marathon route and kept a good pace in the final miles to finish 27th in 4:07:28, improving on his 2013 time by nearly three minutes.  Running impressively over the course for the first time were Peter May (4:24:04) and Chris Rushworth (4:48:03) while Anna Smith tok more than 20 minutes off her 2013 time to finish in 4:40:50.  Thanks to Keighley and Craven for organising another great race.  Full results here.

Borrowdale 21K Trail Run 15 June

watendlath

This was only my second visit to the Lake District so it was an adventure to arrive and be ready for the start on the north west side of Derwent Water.  Reassuringly familiar faces and vests appeared as we gathered at the lakeside and the race began comfortably enough with a few miles of steady running next to the water on soft tracks shadowed by woods.  This was not to last as the route offered very varied terrain.  The next section to the south of the lake featured tough climbs with rocky stepped descents to follow and a long run to the finish on narrow paths cut into the steep Eastern banks.  I’d underestimated the difficulties of the second half of the race and was overtaken by a number of runners, but held on to win the F50 category in spite of a strong late challenge.  So my visit ended very happily and I felt that I’d made friends.  I’d been able to run in the Lake District on a marked route, but going home in the train those huge fells still seemed as distant as if they’d been photographs.
