John Carr 5k #3

Yesterday evening saw the third and final race of the John Carr series (all together now: “awwwwwwh!”), but cry not fellow runners, for there are only about 349 days until we can revisit our favourite waste water treatment works to compete in the 2016 edition. Queensbury Running Club had a truly fantastic turnout to the event, so to all those who took part: thank you for doing our club proud!

Abbie Cleal at the John Carr #2
Abbie Cleal: First Female Junior

It was 5 AM and a blanket of tranquility rested gently over the city of Bradford. Dawn broke whilst most slept, unaware of its resident birds beginning to sing their songs with the most sedulous care; the birds themselves, in turn, blissfully unaware that the forthcoming day would be host to the second John Carr 5k race. Had they known, they would have fallen straight off their perches.

As the day progressed and the event drew ever closer, many competitors would be beginning to experience the onset of pre-race nerves: a racing heart, sweating, the shakes… The explosive start to the first race of the series would have done nothing to help, nor would the flashbacks of a stiff headwind. PBs were however plentiful and aspirations were consequently set high for the following two runs.

But wait: #ConeTooClose! It has transpired that the course of the first race was shy of the full 5 km and the halfway-cone was to be set a few paces further out to compensate, extending the course by 100 metres by my reckoning, which is an additional 20 seconds of running at a 20:00 5k pace. With the calmer conditions but a longer course, how would the Queensbury runners fare?

Queensbury runners were off to a blistering start at the first of three 5k races in the John Carr series hosted by Saltaire Striders. We were well represented and PBs were being achieved left, right and centre in the fast-paced course around the Yorkshire Water estate in Esholt, which boasts just 79 feet of climbing.

Runners were encouraged by a stiff tailwind off the start line, but were victim to its full force in the final kilometer or two to the finish. Conditions next week may see participants shed the odd second to hopefully achieve a fresh round of personal bests.

The next race will take place on Wednesday 13th May on the same course. A very well done to all and if anyone has been missed off the results list, please accept my apologies and email your result through to peter.may@peter-may.co.uk.
