Heptonstall Fell Race 22 March

phil

Conditions for the 15 mile Heptonstall fell race were bright and clear but the moorland was as trackless and tussocky as ever and the climb through the woods to the finish was just as steep.  Peter Hughes won a fiercely competitive V60 race, setting a new course record for the category.  Graham Jowett finished within half a minute of his 2014 time while Mick Coe and Phil Robinson both improved dramatically on their performances last year and Carl Heron set his fastest time yet over the course.

Weekend Report

The Heptonstall Fell Race, a Queensbury favourite, the 15 miler takes in over 3000 feet of climbing around some of the areas finest spots. The race got off to a tricky start for some, with problems navigating the woods early on. Last years winner, Adam Osbourne of Leeds City AC returned to the race and set a new course record, an amazing 1:54:10, well clear of the two persuing Horwich Harriers who completed the top three. Pete Hughes put in an excellent performance to take 13 minutes from his time last year and finish in 2:25:16, his best time yet! Ben Clare was following closely behind in 2:26:26, also taking 10 minutes from last years race. Carl Heron was next 2:41:02, Mick Coe 2:47:20, Anna Smith was in just under 3 hours to take her category first place and followed by Phil Robinson 2:59:40. Graham Jowett completed the Queensbury line up and added to the honours list with a 1st V60 in 3:03:08.

Heptonstall Fell Race…

Four Queensbury runners took part in the Heptonstall Fell Race this weekend. A brutal 6.5 mile fell race with 1500 feet of ascent! With the sun baking down, the task looked daunting and proved too much for one runner who collapsed over the finish line suffering from dehydration and was subsequently taken to hospital in an Ambulance. A number of retirees from the race also highlighted how tough the race was.

Some gritty performances from Peter Hughes, Ben Clare, Mick Coe & Graham Jowett who all showed they could put it in right to the end, taking a number of places in the final climb up the last field. Full results not yet published.
