Sunday morning. It’s that time of the week when it’s practically the law to take an extra hour or two in bed. When one finally does rise for the day, the next custom is to source a bacon sandwich, chased down with a freshly brewed coffee.
A hardy bunch of Queensbury runners had some very different ideas indeed. At the unearthly time of 05:00, the first of 12 QRC competitors crawled out of bed and sacrificed their Sunday morning ritual to race their way across some of the finest countryside in the land. The event? The Calderdale Way Relay kindly hosted by the Halifax Harriers. There are 6 legs in total, with a cumulative distance of over 50 miles. Each leg is run in pairs and competitors must follow strict safety requirements which define the equipment that is to be carried (compass, map and gloves, for example).
Carl Heron took it in his stride to organise QRC’s involvement in the relay, and after some chopping and changing of the original teams due to injuries and other commitments, the final
victims competitors were selected. Carl and Peter May were the first pair to represent the club in a total of 6 legs. So how did we get on?

After a fantastic day of racing, the club finished in 27th position with a total time of 7:24:22. This is a new club record by 3 minutes and 53 seconds; a time which was set in 2013. A big well done to all competitors and in particular to Darren and Andy who set a new club record for leg 5 and also to Matt Thornton, for which this event was his first foray into racing. Now is a very exciting time for the club, which seems to be developing in leaps and bounds and we can only wait with baited breath until the next opportunity to compete in this fantastic event comes around in 2016.
