Yorkshireman marathons 8 September

Runners from the north of England and further afield met at Haworth Primary School on a bright morning with almost no wind. Times were fast in the good conditions and Mick Coe made quick work of the half marathon route finishing 21st of 246 in the excellent time of 2:00:52. The full marathon was also competitive with an exceptionally strong vets field. Carl Heron improved on a time set in the extreme heat of 2012 to finish 47th of 179 in 4:10:09 while Anna Smith felt better after some biscuits at mile 21 and went on to finish 110th in 5:02:48. As usual all aspects of the event were superbly organised and competitors enjoyed routes over some of the most beautiful local landscape.

Leeds Country Way Relay

Queensbury RC contributed 4 runners to the Airedale Athletics Mens team for the Leeds Country Way on Sunday. A 70 mile, 6 legged race around Leeds, run in pairs. Chris Williams ran with Andy Bedford of Saltaire Striders on leg 3, a 9.8 mile route from Scotchman Lane in Morely through to Thornbury, Anna Smith was also running this leg with Ian Ferris of Baildon Runners in a mixed team. Both pairs picked up the fastest times of the leg in the mens and the mixed team races.

Peter Hughes & Darren Midgely ran leg 5 together, just over 10 miles from Golden Acre Park to Thorner Lane in Scarcroft, taking an impressive 3rd place on the leg and Martin Firth ran with Peter Hopson of Bradford Airedale on the anchor leg, taking over from Pete & Darren at Thorner Lane and making the 9.7 mile run back to the start at Garforth Sports Centre who got the 2nd fastest time on their leg as well!

Overall the Airedale team finished 2nd from 49 teams, just over 9 minutes behind winners Valley Striders, a slow start due to an injury of an Airedale runner on leg 1 saw an 18 minute deficit open up, which was gradually shut down over the rest of the course, with 3 fastest legs, one 2nd fastest and one 3rd fastest all going to Airedale, but was unfortunately too much to overturn completely. Pudsey & Bramley finished 3rd and an impressive 4th place overall for the 1st place mixed team Pudsey Pacers.

Weekend Report

Last Wednesday was the YVAA race at Knavesmire. A flat and dry course proved to be a very fast paced 5.8 mile race starting from York Race Course. A strong turn out from Queensbury coupled with some great runs saw the club regain 3rd place in the 1st 4 to count competition. 13 QRC runners took part, Anna Smith, 3rd in category & Cathrine Robinson in the ladies race. Darren Midgley beat rival Allan Dodds of Roundhay Runners by one position to ensure the battle in the M35 category goes down to the last race with both tied on equal points going into the race at Spenborough. Peter Huges, Carl Heron & Mick Coe completed the first four. Phil Robinson & Karl Chamberlain were again close, with Phil just 12 seconds ahead of Karl. Graham Jowett was next in followed by an appearance from recently retired chairman of the club, Steve Jones. Andrew Tempest-Mitchell and Steve Wilby completed the team along with non-counting Chris Williams.

Great to have so many club runners out, especially on a Wednesday night and in particular to see Steve Jones in his now local race.

The revived West Yorkshire 5, put on jointly by Bradford-Airedale AC & West Yorkshire Fire Service was on Sunday. The race has been missing from the Calendar for the last 5 years but has a long history dating back 40 years. An undulating 5 mile course, starting & finishing at the Fire Service HQ in Birkenshaw. The wind proved to make the race very tactical at the front with runners jostling for position all the way to the 4 mile marker before Willy Smith of KCAC pulled away once the wind was behind him to take the victory. Chris Williams battled on for 3rd place just behind Peter Hopson of Bradford-Airedale who took 2nd. Martin Firth was following close behind and finished 10th overall.

Eccup 10 mile road race

The Eccup 10 Mile Road Race, organised by Abbey Runners, took place on Sunday 7th July in blazing sunshine. More than 750 runners and several litres of sun cream hit the road in a highly competitive race which incorporates both the YCAA and the YVAA 10 Mile Championships for Men and Women. Shade was hard to find and quite a few runners either dropped out or fell back in temperatures well about 20°C. Otley AC had a fine day in the sun with Matt John winning the men’s race in 55.07 (he was 28th in the 2013 London Marathon) followed home in second place by team mate Scott Harrington in 56.40. Unsurprisingly Otley won the men’s team prize. In third place winning the 1st M50 prize was Carl Thackery (alas not Carl Heron) of Hallamshire Harriers. If you don’t know this guy’s credentials then, amongst many career highlights, he was 20th in the 1987 World Cross Country championships and third at the World half-marathon in 1993 in a time of 61.13! The first lady was Pauline Munro (Wetherby) in a terrific ninth position overall in 59.43.

Carl Heron, QRC’s only entry, finished in 69.23 in 87th place. Other notable performances from Bradford-based runners were Quentin Lewis (Baildon, 6th in 58.59) and Donna Edmondson-Booker (Idle, 1st F35 in 66.54). All in all it was one of those days when you felt really pleased to get around without succumbing to the heat.
