Ironmen

Congratulations to Phil Robinson & Karl Chamberlain on becoming Ironmen. Both completed the gruelling Ironman event in Bolton on Sunday 20th July. For those unfamiliar with the event, it is a triathlon style event taken to the extreme, with it comprising a 2.4 mile open water swim, which was in Pennington Flash, near Leigh, a quick transition onto the bike to begin the 112m loop around Bolton and Greater Manchester followed by a marathon (26.2 miles) which took place around Bolton’s Reebok stadium and the town centre. Large crowds watched including a few friends from Queensbury.

Karl was first out of the water after the swim, taking 1:17:21, Phil 5 minutes adrift in 1:22:31. The first man out of the water took just less than 47 minutes, showing the quality of the elite competitors in the race. Karl’s first transition (7mins 40 secs) was marginally quicker than Phil’s (8:23) extending his lead by a few seconds. Once the bike ride was underway, Phil started closing the gap between the two and around 70km into the ride Phil went past Karl. Both keeping a good average pace for the entire 180km ride, they finished 35 minutes apart, Karl in 7hrs 21 seconds taking his total race time to 8:25:22 and Phil in 6:17:54 taking his total race time to 7:48:48. Another transition and the marathon began. Karl began clawing back the gap Phil had opened up on the bike, and with each time split closed the gap a little more. somewhere around 35km into the 42km run Karl finally caught Phil. Both carried on a consistent pace and finished the race with less than 20 minutes from a full days racing separating them. Karl came in at 12 hours 50 minutes 56 seconds and Phil at 13 hours 8 minutes and 45 seconds. Fantastic effort and achievement from both. Surely worthy of the hard training and commitment both have shown in the 4-5 months since they registered for the event.

PECO Vs WYWL & Midgely Moor Fell Race

Friday night was the West Yorkshire Winter League (WYWL) presentation. Another great season for Queensbury, as highlighted by the individuals who collected trophies on the night. Pete Hughes retained his V55 1st place and Martin Firth did the same with the V50 category, both making it two consecutive years. Anna Smith also took her category 1st place and Graham Jowett took the honours in 3rd in the V60 category.

The weekend provided a couple of races for Queensbury members. Firstly the end of season PECO vs WYWL Relay. A head to head competition consisting of teams (M open, F Open, Vets & Super Vets) selected from the clubs involved with each league. Queensbury contributed two members to the Male Super Vets (Peter Hughes & Martin Firth, Rob Samuels of Pudsey completed the trio) and Anna Smith raced for the Womens Super Vets. WYWL had the quickest team on the day, made up of Quentin Lewis (Baildon), Gary Bailey (Pudsey) & Ben Mounsey (Stainland). It was actually PECO’s Vets team that pushed them closest, outdoing their younger counter parts who finished in 4th place behind the WYWL vets team. PECO’s super vets team put in an excellent performance finishing ahead of WYWL’s and in 5th place overall. Anna Smith’s ladies team finished above their PECO equivialnts in a close battle.

Midgely Moor fell race attracted our other runners on the day, must have been the 1250ft of climbing in approx 5 miles that they couldn’t resist! (Or perhaps that it had been sold as only just over 1000ft by Mick!?). Also, unbeknown to some, it was a self navigation through 6 check points resulting in a detours and back tracking for some. Mick Coe was first back for Queensbury, breaking 50 minutes in 31st place, followed by Darren Midgely 36th, Richard Brook 62nd and Andrew Stott 73rd. Queensbury did finish 6th in the team competition (1st three to count) which they can all be pleased with as these races are always well represented by the biggest fell running clubs!

Bradford 10k 2014

Clear but windy conditions for the Bradford 10k this weekend made the flat route a little more testing and hindered some attempts at personal bests, but the course does lend itself to a quick 10k time even if the route is a little dull – mainly along Canal Road towards Shipley & back. An excellent overall turnout of around 1,500 runners made the event a good and competitive field although last years winner Tesfaye Debele was clear winner again in this years race in31:42, followed by Scott Harrington of Otley, 33:21 and Kevin Ogden of Spen AC in 33:41. First lady wasDanielle Hodgkinson, coming in an impressive 22nd overall in 35:32. The first 20 positions were all closely contested with a good turn out from all the elite local runners. First back for Queensbury was the vastly improving Andy Stott in 42:48, followed closely by Richard Brook in 43:05, then came Phil Robinson 44:22, Graham Jowett 46:34, Steve Wilby 53:43 & Andrew Tempest-Mitchell
