The Bradford City Run took part this weekend, comprising of a half marathon, a 10k & a 5k. Queensbury RC had quite a few entries into the half marathon with no members opting for the shorter distances. A wet and windy day provided the difficult conditions we’re more than used to up here. Martin Firth (1:25:27) won his age category and finished 7th overall after a close battle with local Bingley rival Stephen Fry. Carl Heron (1:30:55) was next followe dby Richard Brook (1:41:03), Graham Jowett (1:48:33), Andrew Tempest-Mitchell (1:58:35) & Helen Collins (2:24:06)

On Saturday Chris Williams ran in the 15 mile Good Shepherd fell race, starting in Mytholmroyd. A much stronger field than the previous year showed as Chris finished 5 minutes quicker than last time around and 17 places lower in 22nd. Misty conditions on the moors didn’t help and a missed turning on London Road cost some time and effort! A great route though taking in Stoodley Pike twice from different climbs.

The Tour Of Norland Moor hosted by Halifax Harriers is a fell race starting from Copley Cricket Club. A food & music festival was also staged and provided some good food and beer after the race. Some excellent runs from Queensbury resulted in the team prize, with Chris Williams 3rd (38:49) , Martin First 8th (41:44), Mick Coe 24th (44:42), Graham Jowett 69th (52:50) & Jo 72nd (53:05). An excellent achievement given the strong turn out from much bigger clubs such as Calder Valley. Martin was also 1st in his age category, so a very good day for Queensbury RC. The race was won by Tom Adams of Ilkley Harriers, recently selected to represent England in the World Mountain Running Championships which take place in Poland next month.

Heptonstall Fell Race…
Four Queensbury runners took part in the Heptonstall Fell Race this weekend. A brutal 6.5 mile fell race with 1500 feet of ascent! With the sun baking down, the task looked daunting and proved too much for one runner who collapsed over the finish line suffering from dehydration and was subsequently taken to hospital in an Ambulance. A number of retirees from the race also highlighted how tough the race was.
Some gritty performances from Peter Hughes, Ben Clare, Mick Coe & Graham Jowett who all showed they could put it in right to the end, taking a number of places in the final climb up the last field. Full results not yet published.

This was a really friendly and enjoyable event with breathtaking views of hills covered with heather and bilberries from two of the highest summits in the Cheviots. There was an ear-popping descent from the Great Cheviot before climbing back up Hedgehope Hill, and little shelter from the heat in spite of a cool wind on the high ground and clear streams in the valleys. Amazingly the organisers had managed to transport water to all but one of the checkpoints!
