The Wharfedale Trail Half Marathon is a 13.2 mile trail race flagged throughout the entire course. It affords participants and their families the opportunity to enjoy a great day out in some of Wharfedale’s finest scenery with over 2,000 feet of ascents the route follows well established footpaths, including the Dalesway and Mastiles Lane and for those with time to take in the fabulous scenery the views from Scott Gate, Mastiles and Boss Moor are quite breathtaking.
It started out at 8.45am in the club car park but with Tom eager to get going he was there at 7.45.
So, we pulled in to Wharfedale Rugby Club in plenty of time for the 11am start, with registration out of the way, followed by a short safety briefing, the count began and we were away, a short road section over the river towards Grassington, then left and up onto the fields and moors towards the 1st checkpoint at 3.74(ish) miles, with all of us making the cut off point.
From here it was down into Conistone, crossing the main road at Kilnsey, before heading up the notorious Mastilles Lane with the next 2 miles pretty hellish, although the light rain was making for good running conditions, Although some looked to be enjoying it too much.
Checkpoint(CP) 2 appeared a kilometre on from the top, left across the moor from CP2 and on a clear day there would have been some spectacular views across the valley. CP3+4 came and went where young girls give us great support along with cups of water (well done for braving the weather, whoever you were) which left the undulating drop back into Threshfield. With a last mile which seemed to go on and on, all that was left was to cross the line, to the cheering water people.
Well done Wharfedale Harriers on a great race, also a big thank you to Graham Jowett for driving us all home I hope we behaved ourselves. We can’t wait until next years event and with a few more runners we could hire a coach.
