Saltaire: Spring view from Roberts’ Park

The inaugural Saltaire Shaker took place on a sunny and breezy 4th August. The race was organized by Otley Chevin Flyers who also host a free weekly 3 mile trail run in the Otley Chevin Forest Park (http://www.runsunday.com).

The unusual distance of 15 km, a flat, off-road course and picturesque location drew a good mix of club and unattached runners. The course took in a long stretch of the canal out and back with a loop in the woods. Seasoned off-roaders may have found it rather non-technical. The start time of 10.30 also meant that the towpath was shared with healthy numbers of walkers, cyclists and other runners. This proved only a minor issue for me at least and the absence of climbs, apart from the haul in the woods, was welcome (I may get booted out of QRC for such heresy).

The race was won by Mike Jefferies in 56.22, a top-class athlete who has won several competitive races this year including the Humber Bridge Half Marathon and the Otley 10. Baildon’s Steve Watkins came in second  in 57.10 and some way ahead of Franco Pardini running for Leeds club Valley Striders who was third in 59.11. The ladies race was won by Idle AC runner Donna Edmondson-Booker in 64.45.

Thanks to the organizers and marshals and to Steve Brook and Phil Robinson for turning out to support the runners. There was a charity contribution (Yorkshire Air Ambulance) in the race fee and the results were posted and emailed out later in the day.
